Laredo in Texas was named by the Spanish after a mucholder town in Cantabria Spain - so it was that earlier Spanish town that was first to have the name. The origin of the name is obscure and may be a word in an extinct ancient Hispanic dialect' it could be from Latin glareosus (gravelly) or larida (a gull).
