Cathy is a short form of Catherine; it is actually not clear what it's original meaning was. One theory is it comes from Greek Hekaterine meaning "each of two," and another is that it comes from the name of Hecate, a goddess. There are other, less plausible theories. In the early Middle Ages people associated it with the Greek word "katharos" meaning "pure," and this is the etymology that most people prefer.

Cate is short for Catherine. It is of Greek origin, probably from the adjectiv katharos, meaning pure. There are at least two important Catholic saints of that name, viz. Catherine of Alexandria and Catherine of Siena.
