The moral of 'Frankenstein', though multi-faceted, can be simplified as follows: what man creates (through industry and ingenuity) will eventaualy become more compassionate and intelligent than their creator by learning from the creator's maltreatment and ignorant abuse. Through the flames of brutality and depravation rises the compassionate Phoenix of enlightenment but sadly, lonliness and isolation.

The theme of The Modern Prometheus what has come to be known as the story of Frankenstein has become a primary theme of many Science Fiction novels. If you build a monster, it will kill you is the central theme that originated with Mary Shelley's little ghost story and has reverberated through the ages in every period of science fiction since. Two of the most famous modern novels that borrow this premise are Phillip K. Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep (that was adapted into the Ridley Scott movie Blade Runner) and Michael Chricton's The Andromeda Strain. It can also be seen in some of the following: * Richard Matheson's I Am Legend (1954) * ** The Last Man on Earth, 1964 film starring Vincent Price ** Omega Man, 1971 film starring Charlton Heston ** I Am Legend, 2007 film starring Will Smith ** I Am Omega, 2007 film starring Mark Dacascos * Isaac Azimov's "Someday" (1957 Earth is Room Enough) * ** I Robot, 2004 film starring Will Smith
