That the narrator's mother is capable of great cruelty. The worker, Ilya, who was half blind, was forced to leave the town because the mother said that it was him who stole the carpet. Obviously, as you see in the story, Ilya was not the guilty one, it was her mother. Therefore, the mother hurt a helpless man and, as we realize when the author remarks "this particular carpet, though, had disappeared several months before [her] mother was divorced", also cheated on her father.
