Beaks Cheeks Creaks Leaks
A young man has been caught stealing from his boss, and the boss calls his mother. Alfred, the boy, expects his mother to rant and rave or cry, but she is very composed and calm. She talks the boss into just firing Alfred instead of calling the police. But at home, when she sends him to bed, he sneaks back out to tell her how impressed he was that she was able to be calm and do that, he sees that she's sitting at the table trembling with nerves. He thinks back on all the bad things he's done and how she must have reacted in the same way. He thinks it's probably the first time he's really looked at his mother as a person.
There is a man named Gregor and he must work to keep his family alive. One morning he wakes up and discovers he is a roach/ beetle. The first thing that occurs to him when he discovers this is how will he get to work? His boss comes to his house and demands that Gregor come to work, meanwhile Gregor is locked in his room unable to get out on account that he is a bug. Finally he manages to escape, but the boss is gone by then. His family sees him and is disgusted. They lock him in his room and his dad forbids his mother and sister from seeing him. His sister secretly sneaks him food, but even she becomes disgusted with him after a while. The rest of his family realizes they are all able to work and get jobs. They all ignore Gregor. At one point Gregor is able to escape from his room, but there are tenants in the house. His dad becomes outraged, beats him and throws an apple at him that gets stuck in his back. Gregor gives up, stops eating and eventually dies. The maid finds his corps in his room one day and alerts the family. They are apathetic toward his death and decide to move and start afresh together. ---- pretty depressing if I do say so myself
Yes. The resolution is that Rainsford "has never slept in a more comfortable bed," which means that Zaroff lost the final fight, and he was fed to his own hounds.
