During speaking about it, they start to become resentful of the other person and wonder what they could do with the winnings if only the other person was not around. They continue to fight until the climax of the play, when Ivan triumphantly reads off the lottery numbers and they do not match the ticket. The play ends without resolving their conflict, but leaves it to the watcher's mind how Ivan and Masha end up.
