During the American Civil War, the April 1862 Battle of Shiloh was important for several reasons. First, the high number of casualties sparked awareness on both sides of the conflict that the war was going to be more bloody, and take longer, than most observers had so far realized. Second, the Union victory opened up western Tennessee and the all-important Mississippi River Basin to further Union engagement: the South's hold on its western half was beginning to slip.
