Aesop's fables are little stories in which animals illustrate human vices, follies and occasionally virtues. Aesop was said to have been a deformed Phrygian slave from the 6th Century BC, whose cleverness may have led to his manumission - Aristotle mentions that Aesop was a public defender - but so little evidence of his life exists that some scholars doubt whether he ever lived at all. The earliest extant collections of Aesop's fables were made centuries after his lifetime, by Greek and Roman compilers. Modern editors added the familiar "moral" endings.

Here is a Fable of Aesop, rather loosely translated from the original Greek, in its entirety:

A lion was strolling through through the forest when he heard a loud roaring noise. He followed the sound to a pool of water, and when he saw that the big noise was coming from a little frog on the bank, he squashed it under his foot.
