Tsar Ivan IV Vasilyevich had a very bad childhood and saw many of his family murdered at the hands of the Oprichniki at the bidding of the Boyars, probably mostly, the Shuisky family. Ivan IV was crowned at the age of 16 although he had nominally been Tsar since he was two years old. He must be regarded as a very successful Tsar having accomplished great things for Russia including an unprecedented rate of expansion and the defeat of many of Russias age old enemies and oppressors. In his later years, depending on whose version of history you choose to believe, he either became mentally unbalanced or, had suffered enough interference in his running of the country and hit back. He also had to deal with invasions from neighbouring countries, famine and epidemics, and the treachery of some of his trusted military people. He eventually became known as Ivan Grozny (the Terrible) more for his power and strictness, rather than his terror and cruelty, although he committed many acts of violence and cruelty, both personally and from his unassailable position as Tsar of all the Russias.
