ANSWER: Nevaeh ("Heaven" spelled backwards) is a popular name as of late. "The name has exploded in popularity in the last three years; it literally came out of nowhere to be in the top 100 names," says Laura Wattenberg, a name researcher and author of "The Baby Name Wizard" (Broadway). "It's one of the 20 hottest names in terms of its rise for 2005. It's number 70 on the list nationally, and it's No. 55 in Minnesota." Molly Millett of Knight Ridder Newspapers suggests that "the name may have been born in evangelical Christian circles and then moved mainstream in 2000, when Christian rocker Sonny Sandoval of P.O.D. introduced America to his baby daughter, Nevaeh, during an appearance on the MTV celebrity home show, 'MTV Cribs.'" Why is it popular? Who knows for sure? A lot of children are named after relatives, which is unlikely to be the case with a fairly new name such as Nevaeh. Many potential parents look up the original meaning of baby names and use those to help their determination. Others choose names based simply upon how the name sounds. In this case, the name is unique (or at least it was before it suddenly became popular) and apparently many new parents think it sounds cool, as was the case with Charlotte and Jeremy Braucks of Sauk Rapids, MN, who got the idea from watching the aforementioned episode of "MTV Cribs." Wattenberg suggests, "I think Nevaeh has struck a chord because it's a whole new way to create a name. Across the country, there are probably a thousand expectant parents spelling words backward to try and create the new 'Nevaeh,' but it's harder than it seems."
