The word descends from Latin (dubare Old Latin dubitare, to be uncertain), with the addition of a syllable becomes "to be uncertain of". The spelling was retained but the hard trailing "T" overpowered the 'B" sound in Middle English (douten).
Added to original form by scholars to make English seem more intellectual by making obvious ties to Latin roots.
