In most of them, hot water heats metal tubes they in turn radiate the heat. In electric ones, a small element heats tubes filled with oil and they radiate it.

The process is known as convection.

Water or steam is heated in a central boiler, and then circulated by pumps through radiators within the building. The hot water or steam then conducts its heat into and through the metal radiator and conducted into the air around that. The hot air then rises creating a convection current that heats the room. As the hot air rises, cool air takes its place and rotates round until all the air in the room is heated to the same temperature as the radiator (if you have good insulation this will occur faster). If you have more than what I have written feel free to contribute more!Kyle Haynes
