The one in the commercial is not $50, its 60 cents. I'm talking about the buffalo gold coin.

Much moreIt depends on the coin. The US makes 2 different kinds of "$50" gold coins. They're actually bullion pieces and aren't intended for spending; the $50 denomination is artificial.

The first type is an "American Eagle" piece featuring Miss Liberty on the front and an eagle on the back. It contains 1 oz of gold alloyed with silver and copper.

The second type is an "American Buffalo" piece that has an interpretation of the famous Indian head / buffalo nickel design from the early 20th century. These coins also contain 1 oz of gold, but it's 99.99% pure with only traces of other metals.

In addition there are many private pieces, some that are actually gold and lots more that are only gold plated, including the replica piece noted in the previous answer.

Unless you buy the Eagle or Buffalo coins from a certified bullion dealer you're taking a big chance that you'll have one of those copies, or an outright fake.
