I have only recently started an apprentiship in goldsmithing but i belive it refers to the percentage of gold withing the ring as in 18 karat or 24 karat but the number means it is 96.9 percent pure gold wichh is a high percentage. sterling is 92.5 percent so you have a sterling gold ring there my friend :)
