Longitude is the angular distance between a point on any meridian (an imaginary line drawn between the North and South Poles that passes through a particular location on the Earth's surface) and the Prime Meridian at Greenwich (near London, UK) which is at 0° (zero degrees) of longitude.
The International Date Line is 180° both East and West of Greenwich, exactly half way around the world. However, it is not straight as it skirts around certain territories so they are in a particular time and date zone.
Locations West of Greenwich (such as the Americas) have westerly longitudes e.g. New York City, USA is at 74°W while to the east, Auckland, New Zealand is at almost 175°E.
Latitude is the vertical equivalent of longitude, beginning at 0° at the Equator which divides the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
90°N is known as the North Pole, while 90°S is the South Pole.
