Its length on a Horizontal Plane...

Using the pencil in question would have two primary measurements for dimension, Diameter and Length... The diameter deals specifically with the round shape of the pencil while the length describes the other dimension need to solve for total volume of its cylindrical shape.

Using the table in question its length would simply be found by a measurement of either of the horizontal axis... If you were to look directly down a your table from above on axis would its width/depth and the other would be its length/bredth. Generally speaking though if looking at a table from above, which ever axis is larger is given the term length ( IE. the table is 4x6, meaning the table has a width of 4 feet and a legnth of 6 feet, or the table is 6 feet long ).
