The typical U.S. Army battalion is a unit of 800 - 900 soldiers. Hard to give a definite answer because it can vary with time, place and type of unit. In the infantry and engineers (basically army units) the original idea was 7 troops make up a squad, and there are three squads plus a heavy weapons squad in each platoon (more or less 28 troops per platoon); three platoons plus a weapons platoon in each company (more or less 112 troops per company); three companies plus a weapons company in each battalion (more or less 450 troops per battalion).
