A .380 is a smaller, lighter, and generally less powerful cartridge and is usually used in small pocket guns. It's .355 of an inch, or approxmiately 9mm, in diameter. A .40 caliber is .40 of an inch, or 10mm, and under normal circumstances, has a higher velocity and more muzzle energy.
