No they don't. The Orange Roughy (Hoplostethus atlanticus), Red Roughy and Yellow Roughy -- all members of the slimehead family -- live on deep sea zooplankton, amphipods, small fish, and squid. As such, they're predators; not scavengers or reducers.

Note that the Roughy, due to its very low reproductive rate (not atypical of super-deep, low activity fish) is on the endangered list of most producers, which is why you rarely if ever see it on menus or in supermarkets anymore.
