Lionfish are a member of the Scorpaenidae family which is related to the most poisonous fish in the sea, the stone fish.

They are also known as a number of other names such as: Turkey fish & Scorpion fish. the latter name probably comes from the sting which they inject from their dorsal fins when the fish feels threatened.

The disruptive colour camouflage and broken edge fins that the fish has allow it to drift with the current on the reef where it lives ambushing smaller fish with it's huge extending mouth.
