it may sound grotesque, but take minnows and small bait fish and basically put them in a blender with some salt (no salt if the chum is for fresh water) or if you don't want to make your home blender to smell like fish guts then just chop them up into small pieces (small pan fish like bluegill more of a fish mush and bigger fish maybe a bit larger pieces) this has worked best for me but some people like putting the "fish attractor" in the water which is basically fish hormones. you might try mixing this with the chopped up bait fish but i don't buy it because its not necessary for me. another thing, if you use traps for fishing then don't waste your money on "bait bags" just use pantie hos. you will save much money if you do use traps. another thing i have noticed is that the pantie hos hold up much better than the "bait bags" when i go off shore fishing i like to use a little bit of sardines in the mix when I'm fishing for the more carnivorous fish. this works because of the oil in the water attracts carnivorous fish and things like Sea Bass. DO NOT use it if you do not want to deal with a shark because you will if you use a more oily fish like sardines. i have found that oceanic fish enjoy shad. as you probably know, catfish salt or fresh water adore stinky bait (chicken guts) which you can buy in stores

Good luck! and remember if you get frustrated, its called fishing, not catching.
