You should do this the other way around ... mow it first then apply the fertilizer. Otherwise you are just putting all that fertilizer into the grass catcher of the mower.

First you go to a hardware store to go buy the fertilizer, then you either get some water hoes or a handle water bucket. You mix the fertilizer in the water and sprinkle the plants with that water.
