Very few rods are made of fiberglass and almost none are made of wood. You can still get fiberglass rods but for mostly heavy duty fishing like ocean fishing. The only wood rods are hand-made bambo fly rods that cost a fortune. Rods are now made of graphite and other similar composite materials. It is cheap, light, strong and last a long time. Most rods are now made in China.

Fishing weights (often referred to as leads) come in many different forms but the two most common ones are split shot and sinkers (types of sinkers included bell, bank, egg, and no-roll). Any metal can be used as a weight when fishing but generally for cost purposes fishing weights are make out of lead.

Given the harm caused by lead to the environment people are switching to tungsten weights which, unfortunately, are more expensive. The prime requirement for fishing weights is density. The smaller and more dense the weight the easier it is to carry and the less chance it will be detected by the fish.

I've made mine out of stainless steel and aluminum, a cheap source for stainless steel is dinnerware spoons, you can even use the handles on some designs, you just drill, paint, etc., and attach leaders and hooks.
