First and foremost, you must have a love for plants. That's a requirement. Here's a test, if you can grow plants indoors and not die on you for the first 3 months (and that's stretching it out a bit), you may have chance. I know folks that if they even touch a plant, it just dies (not on the spot of course but over a short time). You have a "green thumb" when and if all the plants you touch thrives and grow into full productive plants when you rescue them from death.

Next, you must love being outdoors, not scared of bugs and working with soil. Then you can worry about having skills. Being inquisitive is a needed skill. It's your basic need to know about plants will guide you. Read up on basic gardening and go to your nearby nursery. Check out their tools and related items regarding gardening. Once you have all the info you need to start, buy a small planter. Buy a couple of plants or if its fall season, pick a spot in your backyard with some sunlight and plant a flower bulb. There's no requirement that you must have a big spot in your backyard to consider you a gardener.

Being a gardener takes time and the will to know by inquiring, trying and growing. The worse thing you can do is kill the plant. If you did, just return it to the nursery that guarantees their plants. They will replace it if it dies. You get to start all over again. This is why I love gardening: It rewards you with growth, but if it doesn't, it gives you many chances to try. Happy Gardening!
