This writer once failed to drop a hog with a forehead shot using a Ruger .44 Magnum rifle. He would not personally recommend anything smaller than a .30-30 Winchester, preferably a .308 or .30-06. You cannot be sure of the angle, and a hog is a much tougher target physically than a deer. Stay away from 6 mm calibers except in the heaviest bullets.
Keep in mind that a 7.62x39 cartridge is roughly the equivalent of a .30-30, but you will need to use soft-nose bullets which do not function well in the Kalashnikov action.

Typically a rifle firing a light, fast bullet that is accurate at a couple of hundred yards. Smaller center fire calibers such as .22-250 and .222/.223 have been used for several years. The .17HMR is being used to ranges of about 150 yards, as is the .22 Magnum. A bolt action rifle with a heavy barrel is usually the most accurate- although I have used a Browning BAR in .243. My personal favorite varmint rifle is a Savage in .220 Swift.
