The double bass is the lowest part in the string section of a symphony orchestra. It is usually the lowest part in chamber orchestras as well, if there is no double-bass the lowest part will be played by the cellos.

(Do not confuse this with a basso-continuo, which is a harpsichord part in Baroque era (1600-1750) music.)
