The defrost cycle on an outdoor AC unit is a process that temporarily reverses the refrigeration cycle to melt any accumulated ice on the evaporator coils. This is particularly important in heat pump systems during cold weather, as ice buildup can hinder efficiency and airflow. The unit switches to heating mode, raising the temperature of the coils to facilitate melting, after which it returns to normal cooling or heating operation. This cycle helps maintain optimal performance and prevent damage to the system.
Imagine a window AC unit installed backwards, rejecting heat indoors while air conditioning the world, this is a heat pumps heat mode. As the unit is air conditioning in the cool outdoors eventually the outdoor coil will ice up requiring a defrost cycle, defrost is the AC mode except the outdoor fans off to assist with the defrosting. A defrost cycle is time and temperature initiated, time or temperature terminated.
Yes a compressor will run the entire heating and cooling cycle, unless its in emergency heat in which case you will not have compressor operation. Defrost cycle is the AC mode except the outdoor fan is de energized to assist in the defrosting of the outdoor coil.
do you have a heat pump? are you running unit in heat? if so and the steam is comming from outside unit, this is normal in the units defrost cycle
If you mean using a window AC and installing it backwards so it rejects heat indoors, no and yes, no it does not initially, however as an AC unit has no defrost cycle, eventually the outdoor coil will frost and require defrosting, if this is not done, conceivably liquid refrigerant could enter the compressor and damage it.
Did you happen to move it to Defrost when you turned it off? The ac compressor also runs in the defrost cycle to keep the seals lubricated during the winter months when the ac is not used.
The defrost timer, thermostat or logic board, whichever you have is probably bad. To quickly remove the ice build up on the outdoor unit switch it to run the ac for a few minutes or until the ice clears.
how should the outdoor unit of split ac be protected from animals like squrills and rats etc.show mesh fencing diagrams
If the ice formed while the unit was operating it is a heat pump. The defrost board or whatever other control you may have to initiate the defrost cycle is probably bad. Switch the unit over and run the air conditioning, that wil defrost the ice until you can have it repaired.
because it is going through defrost cycle
Bad compressor
The thermostat(s) in your house cause (control) the unit you are referring to. It is actually called the condensor and is the part that expels the heat from inside your house to the outside.
Either mounted to the fan or in the electrical compartment on the outdoor unit.
