When you tie your shoes, that's a 'granny knot' Some folks make it a 'square knot'. There are probably only about twenty basic knots, but when combined, can make about 3,000 knots. I recently found an old encyclopedia of knots, published in 1944, called 'Ashley's Book of Knots' -it took Mr. Ashley 11 years to compile it!
