In 1792, a British scientist by the name Walburn named it; Sphyraena barracuda. It is the actual scientific name of the animal, Sphyraena is the genus and barracuda is the species. The actual name, barracouta, is actually a Haitian name, however. Bara meaning fierce, and couta meaning fish.
