Mathias Zurbriggen was the first recorded person to reach the summit, on January 14, 1897.

The first attempts to reach the summit of mount Aconcagua, Argentina, were made by German explorer Paul Güssfeldt, who in 1882 marked a route up to 6560 meters but had to descend in the middle of a storm.

In December 1896, a European team was led by English mountaineer Edward FitzGerald and Swiss climber Matthias Zurbriggen as chief guide. After FitzGerald could climb no higher, it was Zurbriggen who reached the summit of Mount Aconcagua (6962 meters above sea level).

After regrouping below, two other members of the expedition, Stuart Vines and Nicola Lanti, also reached the summit on February 13, 1897.
