The first successful ascent of K2, also known as Mount Godwin-Austen, was achieved on July 31, 1954, by an Italian expedition led by Ardito Desio. The summit was reached by climbers Lino Lacedelli and Achille Compagnoni. Prior attempts to climb K2 had been made since the early 1900s, but it remained unconquered until this expedition succeeded.
