It was the 2nd of June when George Mallory and Charles Bruce made their first attempt at reaching Everest's summit. The two set off from the North Col with the full intention to make it to the top. However, it was not to be. A combination of severe weather, exhaustion and problems with porters, the climb was abandoned and they returned to base camp on the North Col.
