They leap from the water and spread their fins, like sails. They glide above the surface of the water for a hundred feet or so, then fold their fins and dive back into the sea. It gets them away from danger far faster than swimming.

Caribbean cruise ships will often have flying fish sail away from the bow of the ship, at right angles to to the keel.
