I found that my, (rather heavy), 17ft dayboat performed fairly well in slow moving rivers using a 9.9hp outboard but needed a 25hp engine in order to make reasonable headway in tidal coastal waters and not feel vulnerable to the changing currents. If the transom will take the load I would go for something around 40hp to give good all-round performance.
