The United States is definitely ahead when it comes to robotic technology. Although it is generally thought that it is Japan that reigns supreme when it comes to robot tech, it is actually the US that leads the world in robotic science i.e programming and mechanics. Moreover, it is not only large corporations or schools that advance robotics in the US like in Japan or South Korea but more importantly the military. The DARPA agency that constitutes the US DOD invests and cooperates alot with educational and scientific institutions including universities like MIT to experiment, develop new systems and gain more ground in the various fields of robotics and DARPA also operates alone continuously innovating and engineering new robots with unprecedented capabilities such as insect robots that can fly, animal shaped robots which resemble cheetahs and snakes and humanoid robots that bear an ominously similar appearance to the terminator. So you can truly see that America surpasses Japan in robotic tech and that the US focuses more on the industrial and military applications of robotics unlike Japan which concentrates on robotic design etc.
