If you are talking about Kellogg's Sugar Frosted Flakes. He was introduced way way back in 1951; along with Katy the Kangaroo, Newt the Gnu and Elmo the Elephant. But his Trade mark phrase "They´re Grrrrreeat " in 1952 made him the icon we see today

Tony the Tiger was introduced in 1951, the original artist who drew him was Martin Provinsen. And he was a story illustrator and he was the one who came up with the idea for Tony the Tiger. In 1952 Kellogg's had a contest which was to decide which animation character would be the spokeperson for Frosted Flakes. The four character's were Tony the Tiger, Katy the Kangaroo, Elmo the Elephant, and Gnu the Newt. Tony the Tiger won this contest and that is the reason why he is the spokeperson for the product.
