Well the most famous for speed is by far the peregrine falcon. its hunting technique is to 'dive' from high in the sky in order to strike a pigeon...which is faster than it at level flight. the peregrine reaches about 200mph.
That is not entirely true. When you measure the flight speed of the birds you have to account wind, height and temperature in order to get true speed in still air. Speeds in range of 100mp/h for merganser or a spine tailed swift are highly unrealistic for low level flight propelled solely on muscle power and are definitely helped by relatively strong winds. It was concluded in one long Peregrine Falcon study that lasted almost 48 years that no pray specie that Peregrine pray upon was faster in level flight. To substantiate that, here is one link where you can see falcons hunting ducks. They dominate the air with ease! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-FZdIrKyBk&feature=related There are no Peregrine Falcons in video, but it is known fact that the Peregrine is faster than Prairie Falcon both in level flight and in a stoop.
The highest velocity of a bird is approximately 200 miles per hour. This speed is reached by the peregrine falcon when it dives for hunting purposes.
The peregrine falcon is a tertiary consumer in an energy pyramid, as it primarily feeds on smaller birds and mammals. This places it at a high trophic level in a food chain, where it consumes animals that are lower in the food chain.
The fastest flying animal is a peregrine falcon in a dive. The fastest mammal is a flying squirell. The Peregrine Falcon. The falcon is the fastest flyingThe White-throated needletail is the fastest-flying bird in flapping flight with confirmed speeds reaching 111.6 km/h (69.3 mph). However, in a dive the Peregrine Falcon is the fastest bird reaching speeds over 322 km/h (200 mph). The Peregrine Falcon is not in the top ten fastest when travelling in level flight.
Peregrine falcon . The Peregrine falcon dives up to 275mph. This particular bird dives from the sky and uses his mouth to stick the prey in it's body to kill it.The fastest bird when diving is the Peregrine falcon The fastest speed the Peregrine Falcon reached ever recorded was an amazing 242.3 MPH or 390 KPH.The fastest bird when in flight is the SwiftThe Spine-tailed Swift, also know as the White-throated Needletail(Hirundapus caudacutus)KPH=171MPH=106The Fastest bird on land is the OstrichKPH = 70MPH = 43.5The fastest bird is the Peregrine Falcon; the fastest one measured reached a speed of 248 mph.Whats the fastest air animal?eagleThe fastest bird in gravity assisted flight (the dive) is the Peregrine Falcon. Moreover, it is then the fastest animal on the planet. But the fastest bird in level flight is the Spine-tailed swift, (Hirundapus caudacutus).
The fastest flying bird currently living is the peregrine falcon. At steady, level flight it can hit up to 60 mph. A peregrine falcon's average dive speed is around 100 mph, such as when it is hunting for food. And if it was in danger, it can dive at speeds of up to 240 mph. But then, of course, it has to stop and that can be tricky at those speeds. But I suppose if its life was in danger, it might risk it.
Falcon (Peregrine Falcon in a power dive is the absolute fastest)SwiftSwallowOf course there are many sub-spieces of each. These are the top three families. A Swift and a Swallow are closely related.
One clear adaptations is with catching its prey ... pigeons these are faster than the peregrine in Level Flight! so the peregrine Falcon has adapted in catching its prey, the pigeon by flying up high...if they can they cleverly conceal themselves by aligning themselves so they are between the prey and the sun. then the perform their famous aerial stunt but folding back their wings and literally nose diving into the pigeon, knocking it unconscious (killing it!) from the force. all the peregrine has to do now is retrieve its meal
A cheetah is the fastest land animal, capable of reaching speeds up to 75 mph (120 km/h) in short bursts. On the other hand, a peregrine falcon is the fastest bird in level flight, reaching speeds of up to 240 mph (386 km/h) when diving to catch prey. So, in terms of overall speed, the peregrine falcon is faster than the cheetah.
Probably the Peregrine falcon that can reach a speed of 180mph in a dive (and supposedly 120 MPH in level flight).
