An uppercase Lambda, Λ, which was the Greek Letter L. It looked like an upside down V, and stoop for Laconia, which was the part of Greece the Spartans were from. Spartans often had the Lambda painted on their shields.

The upside down V means conjunction or AND.
That inverted V symbol is the Greek letter L, being the first letter of the name of the Spartan territory of Lacedaemonia.Early Greek shields had various patterns on them, but then began to adopt the letter of their city to avoid killing their own by mistake in battle. There is a story of an action in Corinth in the early 4th Century in which some passing Spartans who were unarmed picked up some shields of warriors from Sikyon, which had an S on them, to oppose a sally by Corinthians. The latter, being Dorians like the Spartans, thinking them mere 'only Achaeans', ran right through them, rather than thinking twice if they had known who they were picking on.
Answer it
They used an upside down V. This was the most feared symbol in Ancient Times. The Spartans used the inverted "V" (Greek letter Lamda or L) to identify them as Spartans. See other entries in Answers.Com for a fuller explanation. So I guess the original answer is correct as it meant your enemy were the best fighting force in Greece. Hoplights used many designs on their shields including Medusa heads, bulls faces and other patterns to either identify the warrior or to identify their city.
