The company needs to have a general idea that at some point in time, the little discount in price given by the coupon will expire. HOWEVER, many stores will continue to honor out of date coupons, so don't automatically throw those old coupons out,; they may still get you a few cents off. Bed Bath and Beyond will honor all its out of date coupons.
