Use what the child likes as the theme of the room. So if they like space then put glow in the dark stars on the ceiling and space wallpaper. Just make it fun and attractive to the eyes. You can put posters on walls, paint walls, add anything that the kid likes including toys, trophes, pictures...etc.

How to Decorate a Kids' Room

The most important thing for a parent to consider when decorating a child's bedroom is the functionality. Consider a loft bed if space is an issue. Possibly a trundle bed or bunk beds would serve best for siblings. A creative child may need an artist's corner. Custom built-in bookshelves could be a necessity to house those special collector's items. The layout is the key and must allow a child to comfortably dwell in the room.

Consider the gender and preferences of the child when choosing the wall and floor coverings. Pink for girls and blue for boys are wonderful, but soft, warm, neutral colors work best for the backdrop of a restful bedroom and make a pleasing palette to build upon. Mix things up a bit. You can wallpaper without papering every wall. You can paint each wall a slightly different, or even complementing, color. Use an area rug instead of wall-to-wall carpet to protect high-traffic areas or spaces prone to accidents.

Last, but not least, bring in what the child loves and wants. Discover what your child really likes and invent a way to incorporate it into the room. Transform bookshelves into a dollhouse. Create a zoo to contain plush animal toys. Place soccer ball and football-shaped pillows on the bed and hang drapes to match. Paint a mural on the wall. Hang an inflatable toy of their favorite cartoon character from the ceiling. Fascinate them with glow-in-the-dark stars on the canopy when the lights go out. The sky is the limit.
