Absolutely, playing can be brain food. Playing "make believe" helps cognitive development. Kids begin playing alongside one another without interacting at about 1 year old; this is called parallel play. Soon though, at about 15 months old, we begin to see simple social play where they are interested in what the other child is doing and then complex play develops where we see them gravitate to the same sex usually and really cooperate and communicate. Kids should have ample play time, it also helps to develop their social skills.
