Most doctors prescribe antiviral medication to mothers with herpes a few weeks before the baby is due to help prevent break outs.

If there is no sign or symtoms of a break out at the time the mother goes into labor she can give birth naturally with next to no risk of passing herpes on to the baby.

I the mother wants to completely eliminate the risk of passing herpes to the baby then she can have a c-section but this can be risky surgery and should be talked about with the doctor or prenatal care provider.
