because at a younger age the body does not have as powerful of an immune system, and the body has not encountered as many sicknesses as an adult has. As the body catches new illnesses, it learns how to deal with that illness, so it wont catch it as easily again. Adults have had more sicknesses than a child, so their body knows how to deal with it before the virus/bacteria can cause a cold or any harm.
