Childhood behavior and Development can be grouped into four main categories: Intellectual, Physical, Social and Emotional

Age 3 to 5

Intellectual: Preschoolers engage in imaginary play, can name colors, count and have a concept of time. They can sing a song and retell parts of a story. At 3-years-old they know about 300 hundred words and by 5 they know 2500 words.

Physical: Children in this age range can hop, skip and jump. You can also find them climbing and swinging. This is when they learn to ride a tricycle draw, copy and use scissors. They also begin to dress and undress themselves.

Social: Interacting with other children becomes more important. Children begin to pull away from their parents, become more independent and can play cooperatively with others.

Emotional: Emotionally children move between reality and fantasy. This is the time there are “monsters under the bed”. Children can talk and reason about their feelings and begin to understand the emotions of others.

Age 6 to 8

Intellectual: Intellectually 6 to 8- year-olds are developing rapidly. They start to read, count to 100 and, by third grade, they are beginning to learn to multiply.

Physical: Children in this age group are more adept at dressing themselves and selecting their own clothes. They can tie their shoes, throw and catch a ball and balance on one foot.

Social: Socially children in this group focus less on themselves and have more concern for others. They want to be liked and accepted. By 8 and 9 they enjoy participating in small groups. This is a good age for children to get involved in team oriented activities.

Emotional: The school age child continues to pull away from their parents as they try to do more things on their own. They give more attention to their friends. This age group likes and wants to be first and their feelings are easily hurt.

By understanding the behavioral and developmental aspects of your child, you can become a better and more in tuned parent.
