Children and doctors have long been at odds through the early years of infancy through elementary ages. It is important that children develop healthy mindsets about the relationship they have with a doctor to ensure any problems aren’t withheld from their parents out of fear or discomfort. Pediatricians are schooled in, among other things, the art of relating to children and appearing warm. Despite the best practices of many doctors to make the medical appointment enjoyable and exciting as opposed to fear-inducing, some children are simply predisposed to disliking the process. A child’s outlook on life and its adventures is greatly determined by their parents and peers. There are several things parents can do to help promote a good relationship between their child and the pediatrician or child healthcare specialist.
Buy a toy - A number of major toy manufacturers produce toy doctor kits. Enabling the child to dress up like the doctor and give their mother or father a check-up provides a sense of control over the situation and eases any negative psychological associations the child may have had with medical supplies. Teach the child all the different things a doctor will do on a visit, including taking temperature, checking eyes and ears and giving them a little pinch.
Reward good interaction - Though bribing is not generally considered the best way to instruct a child on how to behave, situations that induce fear or discomfort may warrant a reward in the form of sugary foods or a small novelty. Telling the child before they go into see the physician that they will be rewarded with candy or a sticker if they behave is a good way to create distraction and anticipation of the positive reward.
Let the child have some control - When the child becomes the patient, their mother and father are responsible for asking all of the important questions. Some children in their toddler years enjoy the sense of control that comes with being able to ask and tell. Encourage the child to ask the doctor questions about what he or she is doing, and to talk to the doctor as if they were friends as well.
