This poem's theme is death and afterlife. The poet opens the poem with a metaphor "life is like a river flowing into the sea" like life flows towards death. The author wrote the first stanza about a sleeping soul that is wandering, finding the purple place, which is heaven; a sleeping person represents this. The 2nd and 3rd stanzas are about the travel to heaven and leaving everything on earth behind. In the last stanza the soul wakes up, but nothing can wake it up, so the waves flow the soul upon a mossy shore-into a waiting time-between being awake and death.

The rhyming scheme throughout the poem is aaabcccb.

Poetic devices that are used throughout the poem are; simile, personification, imagery, repetition and rhyme.
