There is no specific rule that says you are supposed to. Altough, you may want to. There is no particular dress code. As long as you paid for your ticket, you are allowed in the theater, but it is preferred that you dress up. It's just like when you attend a church or a fancy restaurant. It reflects better upon yourself if you make yourself look nice when attending a Broadway play.
