According to wiki the first good continuous theater. That is not a good answer: good plays had been written by the Greeks even, and all plays run continuously from beginning to end. Shakespeare did not make any big innovations although he did challenge rigidity in thinking about the theatre by breaking rules all the time and frequently trying new ideas. Mostly he raised the bar for playwriting very high, by having coherent characters with depth and plausible motivations, and by setting new standards for plotting and structure. But he was building on the work of his predecessors Kyd, Marlowe, Greene and Peele who made the English theatre a viable entertainment and not merely an academic exercise.
