Why did john proctor rip the confession?

In Act IV of "The Crucible", John decides to rip up his signed confession for two reasons. First, after the confession is signed, Danforth tells one of his court marshals to hang it on the church door so that john can be used as an example to the people who refuse to confess to witchcraft. Once John realizes this he decides that John Proctor will not be used as an example of someone who lies to save his life and, therefore, takes his confession back. The second reason is that John realizes that signing this confession will ruin his name for his three sons. His reasoning is, "Because it is my name." He takes back the confession for those two reasons.

Summarize the conflict that John Proctor is experiencing?

As with all good plays, Proctor is involved with more than one kind of conflict. He is in a Character versus Character Conflict with Abagail who is using the trials to punish those who have slighted her, and to eliminate Elizabeth, so she can have John. He is in a Character versus Society conflict with the court, as it condemns dozens of people on the word of the girls alone. He has a Character versus Self conflict, trying to maintain his honesty when signing a false confession would save his life.

Why do you need to sign a confession?

Signing a confession is considered a formal acknowledgment of guilt. It serves as evidence in legal proceedings and can be used against the signer in court. It is used to ensure that the confession is not made under duress and that the individual is aware of the consequences of their admission.

Why did elizabeth not go after her husband after he ripped up his confession?

I'm guessing this is about the Crucible? Elizabeth let John go to die because he had a big internal struggle and the reason he ripped up his confession is that he couldn't bear the evidence that he had been immoral (by lying to save his life) when his good friends had stayed true and lost their lives as a result of their honesty and integrity. John has such a big struggle with his "name" - "I have given you my soul. Leave me my name" - he doesn't want his children to bear the negative effects of him confessing to witchcraft. He gives his soul to the authorities through signing the confession. Elizabeth realises the struggle that Procotr has gone through and also realises that ultimately he made the right choice for himself as Proctor was more concerned in the end with his eternal soul than his name he left on earth.
