Misunderstanding Romeo's motives based on a prejudice about Montagues and Capulets (notwithstanding that Romeo pleads with him to let him alone, saying "I love thee better than myself) is just Paris's style. What might have happened if Paris had asked Romeo "What is your purpose here?"? But he is not the kind of man to doubt any of his preconceived notions about things.
